On April 25th, several Bowman property owners received a letter notifying them that owners of a neighboring parcel on Vance Road (between BP and Smith Trucking) had requested their property to be re-zoned from FA (Forest Agriculture) District to BI (Business Industrial) District. In an attempt to learn more about the matter, they researched and found there was much more behind the re-zoning request.

How it started

What they found

In their research, the neighbors found that McGill Environmental Facilities plans to develop a “regional commercial composting facility” on the property. The re-zone is needed to make this possible. The cities of Charleston, North Charleston, and Mt. Pleasant will send “sludge” from their towns’ water treatment facilities by truck up I-26 to Bowman to be processed at the composting facility. If you don’t know what sludge is, it’s human feces (and other matters) that have been extracted from wastewater.

Why we oppose

By its nature, the proposed facility poses significant concerns for the residents of Bowman, particularly in relation to our quality of life, the environmental integrity of our community, and the prospect of hindering further positive development of Bowman, SC .
